Birtley Woodland Art Space

A community arts, crafts and wellbeing space for people to come together and learn from professional instructors passionate about sharing and passing on their knowledge and skills to others.

Nestled within the woodlands on the 48-acre Birtley Estate in Bramley, Guildford this Woodland Art Space is an ideal setting to relax, unwind and feel part of nature. Being in the outdoors is good for both our physical and mental health and when surrounded by the flora and fauna of the woodlands you can’t help but feel happy and energised.

Co-founders Ruth Wheeler (ruthwheeler.co.uk) and Lorraine Ellery Matthews (hedgesandhurdles.com) offer a wide variety of experiences and courses between them and are growing their team of visiting Artisans, guest Artists, Makers and Wellness instructors to continue offering a varied programme of events that are interesting, affordable and fun. Experiences include creating with wood (Wood Carving, Pyrography, Wood Art, Spoon Carving), Willow Craft (Willow Art, Plant Supports, Sculptures); Wellness activities (Yoga, Yoga-Nia and Yoga Nidra; Mindfulness, Foraging, Bushcraft etc.); Ceramics and Heritage skills (Wattle Hurdles and traditional Hedgelaying). "Dear Ruth and Lorraine, Thank you to you both for a fabulous day at Birtley Woodland Art Space. The children all had an amazing time learning crafts that they would not normally be able to do at school. The sweetest sight was them all leaving school with their willow fishes. I loved working outside and the nature walk with the Andy Goldsworthy sculpture making worked really well too. You have turned the area into such a wonderful creative space that was so relaxing….even with 60 children in it! I think they will remember this trip for many years to come. We have quite a few photos and will send over the ones that can be used on your SM pages asap. Thank you again from us all. A wonderful day in beautiful surroundings with glorious weather."
